The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad is a division of the Brooks Preservation Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Excursions help to sustain the railroad and fund our many preservation and restoration projects. If you’re unable to ride with us, then consider a membership, volunteering, or a donation instead.

Restrooms are available at the station.
Well behaved dogs are allowed on the train. We ask them to stay out of the seats. Be prepared to clean up after your pet should they use our lawn.

No, the cars have windows that open, or you may ride in the open-air car.
Our excursion experiences are approximately one hour long.
All trains are round trips, so your ride will both start and end at Unity station.
Due to the age of our passenger cars, narrow hallways, and other limitations make them inaccessible to people utilizing walkers, wheelchairs, motorized scooters, etc.
Changes or cancellations must be made a minimum of 10 days prior to departure and will incur a 15% fee. Cancellations made less than 10 days prior to a scheduled departure will incur a 30% fee.
Trains operate regardless of the weather. The decision to operate is based on whether conditions at the railroad. If the train “runs”, no refund will be made. If a train is cancelled, a gift card will be issued – no refunds will be made. Gift cars are valid for 1 year from the stat they were issued.
The train departs Unity station at the advertised scheduled time. The time at which they depart is based on the railroad’s clock. You are encouraged to arrive no more than 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Refunds will not be issued for passengers who miss their train.
Walk up purchase service at the station is limited, especially special themed trains, food trains, fall, Christmas and winter. It is best to purchase tickets online.

The Brooks Preservation Society/Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad prides itself as an all-volunteer organization. Volunteers are essential to preserving our railroad heritage. We offer a plethora of opportunities to explore your rail interest or for learning something new.

Flexible Schedules
We offer Volunteers a flexible schedule. Most activities occur on weekends, but opportunities do exist to volunteer during the week. Projects are assigned based on interest and experience. All efforts will be made to give everyone a choice of projects.
What to bring
Please be prepared for work days by wearing appropriate clothing, hats and gloves. Those interested in train and/or track work need to wear steel toed boots. Please ensure to bring water.
